The geographical scale of Retain to Sustain required a model that could remain consistent in purpose while responding to different urban and community contexts.
Planet Earth adopted a centralised planning and decentralised implementation approach, with a common programme framework supported by coordinated on-ground teams across the seven cities.
The interventions took place across varied community environments, enabling the programme to engage with different groups while retaining a shared environmental objective. Rather than treating each city as an independent activity, the programme was implemented as a single multi-location initiative.

Implemented simultaneously across Noida, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore and Coimbatore, the initiative brought together corporate participation, community engagement and environmental action within a common framework.
The initiative was conceived not simply as a cleanliness activity, but as an opportunity to strengthen the relationship between people, public spaces and environmental responsibility.
From Participation to Environmental Stewardship
Urban cleanliness is often approached as a question of waste removal. Yet the more enduring challenge lies in how communities perceive, use and take responsibility for shared spaces.
Retain to Sustain was designed around this understanding.
Across seven cities, selected community and public spaces became the setting for coordinated clean-up activities, complemented by direct engagement on hygiene, responsible waste practices and sustainable living. This distinction is important.
A clean-up can improve a space. Collective participation can begin to change the relationship people have with that space.
